I’m having a hard time at the moment, with LIFE! Get me out of this place!!!! Honestly, I have never had itchy feet like it before. The frustration, the anger, the aggravation is driving me insane. The feeling of being free again is the feeling I’m craving.
One thing a lot of people don’t understand is that living in a foreign city can still mean freedom, even if you’re working at the same time. I lived in Sydney for around 6 months, and in that time I my job was selling funeral insurance. Oh how fun it was, cold calling people who thought they had won free furniture, to then break the news of ‘no, I’m sorry. I’m calling to see if you’re interested in a years free funeral insurance’. Yeah… I bet you know how many people hung up the phone on me!
Anyway, my point of this isn’t to moan about my past job, it’s actually the exact opposite! The fact I had this crappy job, allowed me to live in one of the most amazing cities in the world, which gave me a sense of freedom like no other! Living in Sydney was a real eye opener, the first experience of adult life began as I started to settle in a hostel in the Kings Cross suburb of this amazing place. I spent my weekday mornings rushing to the tube station after eating a free bowl of cereal at the hostel. Sitting on the overground tube, with Jamie T playing in my earphones whilst I watch the city slowly appear in front of me, getting closer and closer. The walk from the tube station to the office was eventful enough, people all over Martin’s place (CBD), walking, running, scootering. Coffees in hands, it’s all go!
Working in the central business district was great, bars on the ground level of the skyscraper building in which I worked, meaning every lunch consisted of schooner or two of beer! A short walk to harbour bridge and the opera house meant that I could eat fresh calamari with a glass of Prosecco just minutes after finishing a shift.
Weekends were spent at the many beaches and harbours, Bondi beach is amazing! The English fish and chip shop made it a frequent visit, along with the giant Westfield shopping centre (aircon is essential, great place to get cool). Manly is another great beach, in a small suburb with plenty of surf shops, restaurants and cafes, just a short boat ride across from Sydney harbour! Another weekend activity would be drinking, Kings Cross was a great place to do it. Its one of the cheaper places to drink in the city, full of English and Irish bars, and plenty of karaoke if you’re into that! Tattoo parlours open until 4AM if you're feeling ballsy, the city never sleeps really is a legit thing and I tried to soak up every last minute of it from the moment I woke to the second I fell asleep.
The blue mountains is just a short trip away from Sydney, I visited twice whilst I was living there. The first time I went on a day trip with two friends from back home, the weather was scorching hot and you could see the view of trees for miles! It’s crazy when you’re looking out at them, you can almost visualise dinosaurs roaming around the grounds, the area is just so vast!

I’m not sure how to conclude this post, but it’s definitely worked on scratching my itchy feet just a little… freedom isn’t always about being free to do what you want when you want, it’s a state of mind! I was living in Sydney, yes I worked weekdays 9-5, but the knowing I could leave it whenever I desired, created that feeling of freedom for me! There’s a whole world to explore in Sydney, and I did just that in 6 short months, I made friends for life and memories of nostalgia and happiness that I look back on all the time!
If you’re thinking about it… do it.
